Essential Oils 101
What is an essential oil?
INHALATION
One of the most well-studied areas of aroma research is the effect of smell on EMOTIONS and MOOD.
The AROMA of an ESSENTIAL OIL is effective for calming nervous or anxious feelings in a variety of settings.
The SMELL receptors located on the upper surface of the nasal cavity make direct links with the limbic system of the brain, an area that governs the body’s EMOTIONAL responses.
This close connection between AROMA and EMOTION becomes obvious in our everyday life as certain odors trigger MEMORIES or specific FEELINGS. Some AROMAS directly impact MOOD (for example calming, balancing, or invigorating), while others trigger memories of a specific experience, often one tied to a strong EMOTION.
There are many acceptable ways to use Essential Oils for their AROMATIC properties. One method is to DIFFUSE the oil into the air. Not only does diffusion make the oil accessible to the body, but research indicates that there are also AIR PURIFICATION benefits when diffusing oils.
When diffusing oils, use of cold air or hydrodiffusion is best because burning or heating Essential Oils can ALTER their delicate chemistry. If a diffuser is not available, simply DROPPING Essential Oils into the palm of the hand and then cupping around the nose and breathing deeply is a CONVENIENT METHOD for using Essential Oils at ANY time, in ANY situation.
TOPICAL
Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Application of essential oils can have immediate, localized benefit to the target area of application. They have restorative and calming properties and can be used effectively with massage and beauty therapy. The chemical structure of essential oils also allows them to be absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin for internal benefits throughout the body.
Simply apply to the area that is causing discomfort. 1-3 drops is perfect for topical application. Please always dilute with a carrier oil of coconut oil, jojoba oil etc. Some oils are “hot oils” and should always be diluted. Clove, cinnamon, oregano are a few “hot oils.”
When you are unsure where to apply essential oils put a few drops onto the bottom of the feet. Oils applied to the bottoms of the feet will enter the bloodstream and service every cell of the body.
INTERNAL
Certain Essential Oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness. Many essential oils are generally regarded as being safe for dietary use, but some oils should not be taken internally. Do not use any essential oil product internally that does not have the appropriate dietary supplement facts on its label.
Only take oils internally that are labeled for personal consumption with a Supplement Facts guide on the bottle. Oils bought off the shelves are not considered safe to take internally.
Simply add a drop of essential oil, to a glass or stainless steel cup of water or beverage. Do not use plastic as citrus oils leech out the harmful chemicals found in plastic.
What are some basic safety tips?
1) Photosensitivity – No sunbathing after applying citrus essential oils. Citrus oils are sensitive to the sun since they are made from the rind of fruit. Avoid direct sunlight to the exposed area for at least 12 hours of that location may have a skin irritation or burn. Oils applied underneath clothing should be fine.
2) Hot Oils – If it starts to burn, skip the water. Use a carrier oil or whole fat milk. Because essential oils don’t mix with water, applying water to the area can actually drive the burn in deeper. Ouch!
3) Avoid These Areas – Never put essential oils in your eyes, inside ear canal, or up nose. However, you may apply oils around the eye bone in a C shape, on ear cartilage and behind ear bone, or diffuse essential oils.
4) Dilution – Use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil when applying essential oils topically to avoid skin sensitization.
5) Safe Storage – The majority of all adverse reactions to essential oils by children have been as a direct result of accidental overdose and ingestion in large amounts. Keep out of reach of children. Use child proof safety caps.
